Vergleich iMac vs iMac Pro – Lohnt sich bei den iMacs der Griff zur Pro-Variante? Seit Dezember 2017 kann man den lang angekündigten iMac Pro endlich käuflich erwerben. Dabei kostet die Basisversion stolze 5.500,-€ im Apple Store. Klar stellt man sich bei dem Anschaffungspreis die Frage, ob sich die Investition auch lohnt? Was bekommt man für sein Geld? Ist der Preis am Ende des Tages gerechtfertigt, oder ist das eine der oft vorgeworfenen super Apple-Vermarktungs-Strategien eines zu teuren Produkts.
Sollte man sogar so tollkühn sein den iMac Pro komplett aufzurüsten, dann landet man bei über 15.000,-€. Das nette Sümmchen kommt auf Grund der absurden Preispolitik für Upgrades von Apple zur Stande. Deswegen braucht man sich meiner Meinung nach die aufgerüsteten iMac Pros erst gar nicht anschauen. (Außer Geld spielt natürlich keine Rolle.) Sie können keinem Preisvergleich mit einem äquivalenten PC-System definitiv nicht standhalten. Aber das Basismodell sieht mit seinen technischen Spezifikationen trotz des hohen Anschaffungspreises sehr interessant an.
Wie können wir nun am besten feststellen, ob sich der iMac Pro auch wirklich lohnt? Ich denke ein Vergleich mit dem normalen iMac und einem vergleichbaren PC-System wird uns den besten Aufschluss geben.
Vergleich iMac Pro vs iMac
Um annähernd in die Leistungsregionen des iMac Pro zu kommen müssen wir die stärkste Version des normalen iMacs als Basis nehmen, sind dann aber trotzdem gezwungen Upgrades ab Werk mitzunehmen. Wir brauchen ein CPU-Upgrade (auf i7) und ein Festplatten-Upgrade (1TB SSD). Ab Werk kommt der iMac mit 8GB Arbeitsspeicher an. Um mit dem iMac Pro ab Werk mitzuhalten brauchen wir ein Upgrade auf 32GB. Das Upgrade kaufen wir aber klugerweise nicht bei Apple ein. Der Vorteil des normalen iMacs gegenüber des iMac Pros ist die sehr gute „manuelle“ Aufrüstbarkeit des Arbeitsspeichers. Die gilt es zu nutzen!
Insgesamt kostet uns dann der normale iMac 3.560,- € ab Werk bei Apple. Hinzukommen noch ca. 300,- € für den Arbeitsspeicher, welchen wir dann selber tauschen. Gesamtkosten 3.860,-€
So, der iMac Pro kostet 5.500,-€ und ist somit 1.640,-€ teurer. Was bekommen wir für den zusätzlichen Invest. Vielleicht wichtig! Wir bekommen das gleiche Display in allen 27″ Modellen. Hier gibt es keinen Unterschied zwischen dem iMac und dem iMac Pro.
Allerdings bekommen wir 4 weitere Kerne bei unserer CPU und somit ein ganzes Stück mehr Rechenleistung. Allerdings ist der normale iMac in der Single Core Betrachtung leistungsstärker. Hier schlagen die 4,2 GHz zur Buche. Der Unterschied beim Arbeitsspeicher sieht auf den ersten Blick nicht spektakulär aus, ist er jedoch. Beim iMac Pro ist er nicht nur leicht schneller, sondern wird via Quad-Channel Controller angesprochen. Im iMac und in den meisten gängigen Rechnern wird Arbeitsspeicher nur um Dual-Channel angesprochen. (Kann man sich am besten als Parkhaus vorstellen. 4 Ein- oder Ausfahrten funktionieren in der Regel besser als 2.)
Einen großen Unterschied macht auch die Grafikkarte beim Vergleich iMac vs iMac Pro aus. Die Radeon Pro 580 ist nicht wirklich konkurrenzfähig mit der Vega 56. Gerade der HBM2 Grafikspeicher gibt den Vega Grafikkarten einen richtigen Boost. In vielen Eigenschaften ist die Vega 56 fast doppelt so schnell. Gerade im Bereich 3D Rendering oder oder Videorendering wird man diese Vorteile deutlich merken. Auch wer daran interessiert ist viele zusätzliche externe Bildschirme anzuschließen, der fährt mit der Vega 56 besser. Es lassen sich zu dem 5K Retina Bildschirm zusätzlich bis zu 4 UHD Bildschirme bei 60 Hz anschließen. Bei dem normalen iMac sind es immerhin noch 2 UHD Bildschirme, welche sich zusätzlich anschließen lassen.
Thermal Überarbeitung beim iMac Pro
Da der iMac Pro sehr wahrscheinlich mit Kühlung Probleme bekommen hätte, hat Apple die Kühlungsfunktionalität des iMac Pro überarbeitet. Laut Aussagen von Usern und einigen Reviews ist diese Überarbeitung auch gelungen und schafft es die Abwärme der Xeon-CPUs und die der Vega-Grafikkarte auch mühelos zu leisten, so dass die Lüfter nicht hörbar sind (Auch unter Last). Beim iMac mit dem Core i7 (4,2 GHz) hingegen hört man bei Last den Lüfter schon sehr deutlich. Zwar hat der Lüfter keine nervige Frequenz dabei, aber er pustet schon deutlich.
Fazit – Vergleich iMac vs iMac Pro
Der Vergleich iMac vs iMac Pro ist am Ende ganz spannend. Für den Aufpreis von 1640,-€ bekommt man sehr viel Rechenleistung und Ausstattung. Auch solobetrachtet sind die hochwertigen Komponenten, welche in der Basisversion des iMac Pro verbaut sind ihr Geld wert. Wer auf die Idee kommt eine PC-Workstation mit den gleichen Komponenten zusammen zubauen, wird sich wundern wie schnell er bei dem gleichen Preis landet. Nur verzichtet man dann auf ein extravagantes Design und eine nahezu perfekte All In One Lösung.
Aber am Ende sollte die Frage beantwortet werden, ob man nicht lieber einen iMac Pro kaufen sollte anstatt eines hochgezüchteten „normalen“ iMacs.
